Zhu Rongji is cremated as Xi Jinping leads final tribute
Zhu, who died aged 97, served as premier from 1998 to 2003 and is widely credited with steering China’s shift toward a market-based economy and WTO entry.
Chinese President Xi Jinping led the Communist Party leadership in a final tribute to former premier Zhu Rongji, who was cremated on Tuesday as national flags were lowered to half mast, according to Xinhua.
Zhu died of an illness in Beijing last Wednesday at age 97. He served as premier from 1998 to 2003 and was regarded as a key figure in China’s economic reform, including the transition toward a market-based economy and the country’s entry into the World Trade Organization.
At Zhu’s funeral at Beijing’s Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery, Xi, Premier Li Qiang, the five other members of the Politburo Standing Committee, and Vice-President Han Zheng paid their respects, Xinhua said. The state news agency reported the group stood in silence at about 9:30am, took three bows, and shook hands with Zhu’s family to offer condolences.
