Capula hires energy traders from Freepoint and Element Alpha
The hires will trade European and US energy futures as Capula expands in energy and commodities amid sector volatility.
Capula Investment Management has hired two experienced energy traders as it expands its footprint in energy and commodities markets, according to a report cited by Hedgeweek and attributed to Bloomberg sources. The appointments bring Wouter Verdam, who joined from Freepoint Commodities as a portfolio manager, and Jakob Stawiarz, who moved from Element Alpha. Hedgeweek said the two began at Capula this week. Verdam will be based in Capula’s Zug office in Switzerland, and Hedgeweek reported that he spent more than seven years at Freepoint and previously worked at Citigroup. Stawiarz is joining the firm’s Geneva operation, after work at Ocean Leonid Investments, according to the same report. Hedgeweek also said the traders will trade European and US energy futures. Capula manages about $35bn, and was co-founded more than two decades ago by Yan Huo, who previously established JPMorgan Chase’s fixed-income proprietary trading operation.
