Hong Kong seizes 118kg smuggled pests and frozen pet food
Hong Kong Customs estimated the haul is worth about HK$35,000, and the driver is being investigated as authorities pass items to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
Hong Kong authorities seized a shipment of live pest insects and frozen pet food components at the Man Kam To control point, stopping a goods vehicle the day before, according to the SCMP Economy.
The Customs and Excise Department said the 118kg load included smuggled cockroaches, frozen domestic rats and mealworms, along with moth larvae and fruit flies mixed with declared goods.
Officials said the items were suspected to be smuggled live plant pests and frozen pet food, and they estimated the market value at about HK$35,000, or US$4,460.
A 40-year-old local male driver was arrested, and Customs said the investigation is ongoing, with the materials passed to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up.
