Kazakhstan faces US ultimatum over AI pact participation
US officials are reportedly preparing to ask 35 signatory states to avoid a China-led AI initiative or risk having US AI cooperation halted, putting Central Asia ties at stake.
Kazakhstan, along with other Central Asian states such as Uzbekistan, is caught in the widening rivalry between the United States and China over AI architecture and design, according to OilPrice.
The US State Department has drafted what is described as an ultimatum for 35 countries that signed an AI cooperation pact with Washington, Reuters reported, with US officials reportedly seeking a pledge to refrain from participating in a China-led AI development initiative.
If a signatory declines, the US would halt AI cooperation, the reporting said, adding pressure for countries pursuing a multi-vector approach to balance interests from major powers.
Kazakhstan signed the American-sponsored “AI Opportunity Statement” in June, which the US frames as a foundational building block for AI collaboration, part of a broader US initiative called Pax Silica focused on AI and supply chain security.
