Ross Stores shares jump after Q2 beat and higher guidance

Ross Stores rose about 8% in extended trading after Q2 results, following a day earlier where TJX showed softness in Marmaxx and pulled the category lower.

Ross Stores shares swung sharply after the off price retailer posted Q2 2026 results that topped analysts' expectations and lifted full year guidance. The stock initially fell more than 2% before the report, then rose roughly 8% in extended trading as investors recalibrated their view of the group.

MarketBeat Ratings links the turnaround to a near term narrative shift in the off price segment. The report came one day after TJX Companies reported earnings, and TJX had shown some softness in its Marmaxx business, with comparable store sales rising just 1%.

The broader backdrop also set up near term caution ahead of Ross' numbers. U.S. retail and food services sales fell 0.6% in July from the prior month, according to the Commerce Department, pulling back after a modest gain in June.

MarketBeat Ratings notes that with weakness in TJX after its Aug. 19 results, Ross was widely read as a potential proxy trade. Clothing and accessories posted growth of 1.9% in the same data, but the category reaction to TJX reflected the gap between headline expectations and underlying fundamentals, until Ross reported.
