AI roles pay about $177,000, but women get 26% of hires in 2025

LinkedIn data cited by Yahoo Finance shows women were 26% of hires for U.S. AI-skilled roles in 2025, versus 50% for non-AI roles.

New research highlighted by Yahoo Finance suggests AI-related job listings in the U.S. typically advertise pay of about $177,000, more than double the roughly $80,000 shown for non-AI roles. The wage gap points to a lucrative premium for workers with AI skills, but it also raises concerns about who is getting access to those opportunities.

According to LinkedIn data referenced by Yahoo Finance, women accounted for just 26% of hires into jobs requiring AI skills in 2025, compared with 50% of hires into non-AI roles. The article frames this as a risk that the AI pay advantage could widen existing gender disparities in technology employment.

Yahoo Finance also cites commentary noting that hiring can be shaped before recruiters ever see resumes, through applicant self-selection and how employers define who qualifies as AI talent. It adds that women who do use AI may benefit, with Gusto research finding 54% of women who used AI to launch a business said it made the process easier, versus 47% of men.

The article attributes additional concerns to a Professional Development Director for the Society of Women Engineers' New York chapter, who argues the barrier goes beyond skills and adoption, implying other structural factors could affect whether women get hired into AI roles.
