Bessent warns all countries are exposed to US Iran sanctions
Bessent said the US will give countries a finite timeline to stop identified Iran-linked activities and will use Treasury authorities if they do not comply.
Forexlive reports that US Treasury nominee Scott Bessent said no country is outside the reach of US sanctions related to Iran, including China, as the Trump administration seeks to reduce Iranian ties worldwide.
According to Bessent, the US is pushing for “zero leakage” on sanctions, and countries will have a finite timeline to shut down activities the US has identified; if they do not, Washington said it would use Treasury authorities.
He also said the US will not set specific, open-ended timelines, adding it does not have “infinite patience,” and warned that every country should be prepared to face US sanctions if it supports Iran.
Bessent further indicated he expects a major financial institution to be sanctioned this week, and said Treasury has not yet bought back any bonds, with the first operation scheduled for Sept. 9.
