CAMRA membership sinks to eight-year low, accounts show deficit
CAMRA reported an £800,000 loss last year as its membership fell to its lowest level in eight years.
The Campaign for Real Ale, which promotes traditional “real ale” in Britain, said its membership has dropped to an eight-year low and that its accounts show it is in the red, reporting an £800,000 loss last year, according to the Guardian Business.
The outlet described real ale as a cask beer that keeps fermenting with live yeast until it is served, contrasting it with cold, fizzy lager produced with yeast killed and carbon dioxide added.
CAMRA’s chief executive Tom Stainer said independent breweries face unfair competition from multinational brewers, arguing that pubs are increasingly offering a limited set of beers controlled by a small number of large companies.
Stainer said this creates an “illusion of choice” for customers, because many beers available in high-street bars are owned by the same big brewers.
