Duolingo sees 27.4% DAU growth after AI fears resurface
The companys filing tied to an Aug. 18 investor meeting showed estimated daily active user growth of 27.4% on Aug. 17 versus a year earlier.
Duolingo is facing renewed debate about whether generative AI could eventually replace language-learning apps, but the companys recent user momentum is complicating those concerns, according to coverage by Yahoo Finance.
The report says AI has created challenges for Duolingo, including user backlash after the company replaced some human contractors with AI as part of an AI-first strategy. At the same time, it argues generative AI has helped Duolingo expand what it offers by accelerating the creation of new learning courses.
The most concrete signal cited came on Aug. 19, when Duolingo inadvertently disclosed estimated daily active user growth figures during an Aug. 18 meeting with investors at its offices. Based on a company filing described in the article, the data showed estimated DAU growth of 27.4% on Aug. 17 compared with the prior year, with similar estimated growth rates during the preceding days of August.
Yahoo Finance also notes that user growth strength suggests fears that AI will make Duolingo obsolete may be overstated or at least premature, pointing to resilience in engagement even as Duolingo continues shifting how content is produced.
