World indexes mostly higher, led by Japan’s Nikkei 225 in 2026

Through Aug. 24, 2026, the Nikkei 225 is up 30.2% year to date, while India’s BSE SENSEX is down 9.2%.

ETF Trends tracks nine major global stock indexes and finds that, through Aug. 24, 2026, six of the nine are still in positive year to date territory.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 leads the group with a 30.2% year to date gain, followed by Canada’s TSX at +15.8% and the United States’ S&P 500 at +11.8%.

On the downside, India’s BSE SENSEX has fallen the most, down 9.2% for the year, while China’s Shanghai Composite is down 2.2% year to date.

The watchlist also includes a comparison of where each index stands versus its all time peak, and it notes that Germany’s DAXK is tracked as a price only index for consistency with other indexes that exclude dividends.
