Morrisons trials AI smart trolleys that auto price items
The Instacart Caper trolleys scan, weigh, and tally items in the trolley, letting customers check out by scanning a screen instead of visiting a checkout.
Morrisons has started a UK trial of AI powered smart shopping trolleys at a store in Ashton on Ribble, Lancashire, becoming the first supermarket in the country to test the technology. The trolleys, known as Caper and created by San Francisco based Instacart, are designed to let shoppers complete purchases without scanning items individually.
According to The Guardian Business, the Caper trolleys automatically register each item placed in the basket, adding up the cost as customers shop. They also recommend related products, and at the end of the trip customers can scan the trolley screen rather than going to a checkout.
The trial follows earlier efforts in the UK to replace traditional checkout with grab and go systems that charge via cameras, including Amazon Fresh, which failed to take off and closed its last physical British store in 2025. Morrisons said it plans to roll the smart trolleys out to supermarkets across the country.
The story adds that the smart trolleys are already in use in more than 100 cities worldwide, and that Preston is the first city in Britain to adopt them after the supermarket chain announced the local test. Customer Matthew Byrne said the trolley helped him keep track of what he bought, noting his difficulty sticking to planned shopping lists.
