ECB policymaker warns against complacency on European price stability
A member of the ECB and Austrian central bank said Europe’s economy has been more resilient than expected while inflation threats remain.
Martin Kocher, governor of the Austrian National Bank and an ECB member, said in an interview with Bloomberg that Europe’s economy is showing more momentum and has proved more resilient than expected.
At the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday, Kocher said the balance of risks leans toward price stability, but warned there are threats to keeping inflation in check and that officials must stay alert rather than complacent.
Kocher also stressed the role of how long-lived inflation could prove to be, while reiterating the ECB’s primary mandate to maintain price stability and the impact that interest rate settings can have on the euro, according to the piece.
