Westinghouse reaches initial criticality for eVinci microreactor
The test, conducted at Nevada National Security Site with DOE national labs, validated core design assumptions and modeling for Westinghouse’s heat pipe-cooled microreactor.
Westinghouse, which is 49% owned by Cameco Corp. (CCJ), has achieved initial criticality for its eVinci microreactor this month, a milestone tied to advanced nuclear development, ETF Trends reported. The company conducted the test in partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory.
According to ETF Trends, the effort included zero-power criticality testing for the 5 MWe eVinci microreactor at the Nevada National Security Site. The result validates core design assumptions and modeling for Westinghouse’s heat pipe-cooled microreactor.
ETF Trends also linked the milestone to broader momentum in advanced reactor work, noting it comes after Oklo’s regulatory and operational progress on its radioisotope and fast-reactor designs. The outlet said collaborations with national labs are building toward scalable commercial rollouts as demand for additional power grows.
For investors seeking nuclear-themed exposure, ETF Trends pointed to Oklo and Cameco as holdings of the Range Nuclear Renaissance ETF (NUKZ), which provides exposure across the nuclear value chain. The fund is described as covering nuclear segments including advanced reactor developers, utilities, construction services, and fuel providers.
