Borton & Sons to lay off 928 farmworkers in Washington as harvest ends
The layoffs begin Nov. 8 and run through Nov. 15 across multiple Washington locations, with the company treating the cuts as permanent due to no 2027 recall dates identified.
Borton & Sons, a Washington fruit grower and packer, plans to lay off 928 farmworkers in November as this year’s harvest winds down, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification reviewed by TheStreet.
The affected workers are general farm laborers employed under the federal H-2A program, which allows agricultural businesses to hire foreign workers for temporary or seasonal jobs when there are not enough U.S. workers available.
The company said the layoffs will start Nov. 8 and continue through Nov. 15 across operations in Yakima, Zillah, Pasco, Burbank, Prescott, Soap Lake, Othello, and Mesa.
Borton characterized all 928 departures as permanent, saying it has not identified specific recall dates or staffing needs for 2027, and it said it is not yet clear whether additional domestic workers could be affected as harvest conditions and staffing needs evolve.
