Japan industrial output holds up as retail sales rebound

Industrial Production rose 0.1% month over month in July and 4.1% year over year, while retail sales increased 2.4% month over month, supporting the Bank of Japan normalization path.

Japan’s industrial sector held up better than expected in July, with Industrial Production up 0.1% month over month, slowing from 1.9% in June but still extending gains for a fourth straight month. The data also beat expectations for a decline, with output 4.1% higher year over year, according to Action Forex.

Shipment and inventory details were described as constructive. Shipments climbed 2.2% month over month, inventories rose 0.5%, and the inventory ratio fell 1.7%.

Separate retail figures added a domestic-demand signal: retail sales rose 2.4% month over month in July after household spending had fallen for seven consecutive months through June as higher prices weighed on discretionary consumption.

Action Forex said the combined data reinforce the case that Japan’s economy is absorbing external shocks without a sharp loss of momentum, even amid higher operating costs and supply-chain disruption linked to the Middle East conflict. That backdrop keeps the Bank of Japan normalization story intact heading into its Sept. 18 policy decision, with Monday’s figures seen as not forcing a rate hike but reducing growth-side reasons for caution, leaving incoming inflation and wage data as key tests.
