Project Janus to award up to $2.2B for military microreactors

The U.S. Army is targeting initial operation of a microreactor by September 2028, with more than 20 planned across bases.

ETF Trends highlights two U.S. government nuclear programs that show rapid momentum in advanced reactor development. The Nuclear Energy Launch Pad added 13 reactor and fuel cycle technology projects to its pipeline.

The U.S. Army’s long-awaited Project Janus will move five reactor development projects forward on military installations, selecting five vendors to deploy microreactors across multiple bases in locations including Kentucky, Texas, and New York.

The Army plans to award up to $2.2 billion across fiscal years 2027 through 2031, supplemented by private capital. The initial target is to have a reactor operating by September 2028, with projections for over 20 microreactors eventually being deployed, aiming to help commercial developers through first-of-a-kind and second-of-a-kind deployments.

ETF Trends also points to fund exposure, citing the VettaFi Nuclear Renaissance Index, NUKZX, as offering multiple points of exposure to companies participating in the program. The article notes BWX Technologies is working on a 20 megawatt gas-cooled reactor to be deployed at Fort Campbell, and that Westinghouse, 49% owned by Cameco, was selected to develop and deploy the eVinci microreactor in New York, with its pilot heat-pipe-cooled design reaching initial criticality the prior week.
