Range-bound market could affect India inflows, Samco CIO says

Samco Mutual Fund CIO Umeshkumar Mehta said India households are increasingly investing through systematic investment plans, which has helped stabilize domestic flows during past volatility.

LiveMint Markets spoke with Umeshkumar Mehta, chief investment officer at Samco Mutual Fund, who said a range-bound market could eventually affect domestic capital inflows.

Mehta added that India’s current domestic participation is structurally different from a decade ago, pointing to the formalization of household savings, higher financial awareness, and the convenience of systematic investing, which he said has supported the resilience of the SIP book even during volatile periods.

He said domestic investors now appear to have a longer time horizon and are less likely to react to every short-term correction, helping offset periods of elevated foreign portfolio investor selling.

Mehta also cautioned that weak market returns for an extended period could erode sentiment and slow incremental flows, while noting the Nifty headline performance may not capture how different market segments and sectors are experiencing independent earnings and valuation cycles.
