Treasury Secretary Bessent says U.S. will keep pressure on Iran
He linked the approach to expectations that the U.S. will rely on economic strength despite higher oil prices and inflation.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking to reporters at the G20, said Iran is taking sanctions seriously and that the United States will continue to exert pressure.
According to Forexlive, Bessent suggested Iran is lashing out kinetically as it faces economic strain, while arguing that Iran does not need its economy to collapse for it to change course.
Forexlive also reports Bessent framed the U.S. stance around letting the economy hold up even as higher oil prices and higher inflation raise pressure on the outlook.
He added that the strategy reflects giving up on cutting costs to reduce the deficit and not prioritizing lowering rates that could help the deficit.
