Financial planners help patients manage cancer cost stress
A pilot study of 107 blood-cancer patients found comprehensive financial planning improved mental and physical quality of life and was linked to a 56.0% lower likelihood of dying during treatment for those experiencing financial toxicity.
Cancer can create major financial strain on patients and families, with the National Cancer Institute describing those severe costs and fallout as “financial toxicity,” according to Yahoo Finance.
Yahoo Finance reports that physician and financial planner Dr. Carolyn McClanahan highlighted a critical planning window between diagnosis and the start of treatment, when patients can organize benefits and prepare before care drains physical and mental resources.
According to Yahoo Finance, a pilot study of 107 patients treated for blood cancers found that those receiving comprehensive financial planning had higher mental and physical quality of life, and among people experiencing financial toxicity, the intervention was associated with a 56.0% lower likelihood of dying during the course of treatment.
