Vanguard 500 Index Fund marks 50 years since its 1976 launch

VFINX opened in 1976 with $11.3 million raised, and Vanguard says a $10,000 initial investment would have grown to over $2.4 million by July 31, 2026.

ETF Trends highlights that the Vanguard 500 Index Fund, ticker VFINX, reached its 50th anniversary on August 31, 2026. The fund originally launched on August 31, 1976, then known as the First Index Investment Trust, with $11.3 million raised versus a $150 million target.

The outlet says the fund was created to challenge the prevailing belief that investors needed high cost active management to outperform. Vanguard founder John C. Bogle pursued a lower cost indexing approach, even though the idea faced skepticism when it debuted.

According to Vanguard, an investor who put $10,000 into the index fund at launch would have seen that amount grow to more than $2.4 million by July 31, 2026. The piece also notes that Vanguard estimates investors have saved about $570 billion in investment fees through index investing since 2000.

ETF Trends adds that indexing has become more widely used over time, including through S&P 500 index based ETFs such as the $1 trillion VOO, reflecting how the approach has expanded beyond the original mutual fund framework.
