Japan finance minister links debt growth trend to fiscal and FX talks

Katayama said Japan is using fiscal policy focused on growth and sustainability, and he described G20 discussions on currency intervention as aligned with a G7 pledge.

Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said debt growth is a global trend, as Japan lays out fiscal policy aimed at boosting growth while maintaining sustainability, according to FXStreet.

Katayama added that U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent referenced U.S. strategies for managing debt during the same international discussions, which covered global imbalances and topics including emerging market debt and financial literacy, FXStreet reported.

FXStreet also said Katayama told the G20 that Japan and the United States view currency intervention through the lens of alignment with a G7 pledge, and that he declined to comment on specific foreign exchange levels after questions tied to market moves in Japanese government bond yields.

The article further noted that Japan’s exchange and rate backdrop has been shaped by Bank of Japan policy, including the shift away from ultra-loose settings since the BoJ’s rate lift in March 2024, after years of quantitative and qualitative easing and yield control that had contributed to yen weakness.
