Moderna’s personalized mRNA melanoma vaccine highlights precision medicine push

ETF coverage notes the technology is backed by trial data showing lower recurrence and metastasis risk when paired with KEYTRUDA.

Healthcare is shifting from one-size-fits-all treatments toward individualized therapies designed around a patient’s biology, and Moderna’s recent clinical update is being used as an example of that trend. ETF Trends points to the Healthcare Technology and Innovation Index, or HTEC, and specifically its precision medicine subsegment, which tracks developers of custom therapies tied to genetic profile, environmental factors, and lifestyle.

According to ETF Trends, Moderna, in partnership with Merck & Co., reported successful results for intismeran, a personalized mRNA cancer vaccine targeting melanoma. The outlet says the results mark the world’s first success in a late-stage trial for a personalized mRNA cancer therapy.

ETF Trends reports that Moderna stock jumped 176.97% on the announcement day. The trial focused on patients whose melanoma had been completely surgically removed and who, under the standard of care, still faced a high likelihood of recurrence.

The outlet also cites U.S. estimates that about 112,000 new melanoma cases will be diagnosed in 2026, with more than 8,500 deaths. It adds that prior data combining KEYTRUDA with Moderna’s personalized mRNA approach showed a 49% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death, and a 59% reduction in the risk of distant metastasis.
