Uber to cut 3,300 corporate jobs in management overhaul

The restructuring includes tightening remote work, with the company asking most employees to come into the office and reducing micro-teams by nearly 50%.

Uber plans to reduce its global workforce by about 10%, eliminating around 3,300 corporate roles as it restructures management and merges teams, according to a message to staff described by The Guardian Business. The company said the changes are meant to make operations “simpler and faster” by cutting layers of management and consolidating ownership and coordination structures that had grown more complex as the business expanded over the past five years, The Guardian Business reported. Uber did not break out how many jobs would be affected by location, including offices in London. Uber is also tightening its remote working rules. It plans to ask the majority of staff to work in the office, with less than about 1% of employees working remotely, and it will reinforce a hybrid policy requiring employees to be in the office three days a week, The Guardian Business said. Organizational changes described by The Guardian Business include combining operational and tech teams and cutting the number of “micro-teams” that report to a single manager by nearly 50%, along with reducing the number of employees more than seven layers away from the CEO by 20%. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the decisions are difficult but meant to strengthen the company for the years ahead.
