UVA endowment logged record 27% return after backing AI hedge fund

UVIMCO said its long-term investments gained 27% for the 12 months through June 30, lifting total assets to a record $18.8bn, with about half in the endowment.

The University of Virginia’s investment portfolio benefited from an early stake in AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness, helping the university’s long-term investments post a record 27% return for the 12 months through June 30, according to a report by Bloomberg cited by Hedgeweek. Hedgeweek reports that UVA was among a relatively small group of institutional investors to back the fund, which was founded by 24-year-old AI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. While Situational Awareness later faced a sharp reversal in July that triggered margin calls and forced it to liquidate much of its public-equity portfolio, its earlier gains still contributed to UVIMCO’s strong results. Citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, Hedgeweek said UVIMCO’s long-term investments took assets to a record $18.8bn, and that roughly half of those assets are held in the university’s endowment. The performance compares with a 12.4% return in the prior fiscal year. Hedgeweek also notes that UVIMCO is understood to have profited from its Situational Awareness investment, though the university does not disclose the size or timing of individual stakes. UVA’s latest tax filing, Hedgeweek said, showed $1.3bn invested in long-short equity funds as of June 30, 2025.
