Millennium, Verition consider Athens offices as hedge fund talent shifts

The potential moves are being discussed alongside other signs of growing hedge fund interest in Greece, including Rokos founder Chris Rokos’s decision to relocate from the UK.

Millennium Management is considering opening an office in Athens, according to Hedgeweek, citing a Bloomberg report that says the multi-strategy firm is in discussions with Greek authorities about a possible Athens operation, including staffing requirements for its fund. London-based portfolio manager Rahul Chopra is among those considering relocating to Greece, the sources said.

Verition Fund Management is also examining whether to establish a presence in Athens, though its plans remain early stage with no decision yet, Hedgeweek reported. The article says Millennium, Rokos Capital Management, and Verition together oversee about $134 billion in assets, underscoring how notable the potential shift could be for Greece’s efforts to grow its hedge fund industry.

The discussions come after Rokos founder Chris Rokos decided to leave the UK for Greece, strengthening Athens’ push to position itself as an alternative base for wealthy hedge fund founders and investment professionals. Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis is expected to meet financiers during an upcoming London visit as part of the government’s campaign.

Hedgeweek also notes the broader competitive backdrop among financial centers for mobile hedge fund talent. It says London remains Europe’s dominant hub, with the UK hedge fund industry employing about 40,000 people and generating roughly £3.9 billion in tax revenue, while managing around £400 billion, about 10% of global industry assets, though firms have expanded geographically as relocation becomes more common.
