Millennium Management plans Athens expansion for hedge fund presence

The firm, founded in 1989, says the new Athens operation will support Greece’s asset-management ecosystem and help attract investment professionals, as it manages more than $97bn in assets.

Millennium Management is preparing to establish a presence in Athens, adding to a growing roster of alternative investment firms expanding in Greece, according to a report by Reuters. Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis said the plan was discussed with Millennium President Ajay Nagpal and EMEA chief executive Martin Pabari after a meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Millennium said its new Athens operation will support the development of Greece’s asset-management ecosystem and is part of its efforts to attract investment professionals from around the world and connect them with its global platform. Pierrakakis described the move as evidence of Greece’s growing profile as a destination for investment and financial services.

The Greek government is seeking to develop Athens into a European center for investment and international talent. Millennium, founded in 1989 by Israel Englander, manages more than $97bn in assets and employs over 7,000 people worldwide, according to its website.
