Trump raised concerns about yen weakness in Japan-US summit

Japan’s finance minister said she first disclosed the currency discussion after consulting with the Prime Minister’s Office, citing ongoing yen weakness despite a July joint intervention.

Japan’s finance minister said US President Donald Trump raised concerns about the yen’s weakness during a Japan-US summit with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, according to statements reported by SCMP Economy. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said Trump expressed concern about the yen’s weakness at the meeting.

Katayama said she was disclosing the exchange for the first time after consulting with the Prime Minister’s Office, describing it as unusually detailed given that such leader conversations are typically kept confidential.

The finance minister’s account pointed to shared concern in Tokyo and Washington over the yen’s continued slide, even after Japan and the United States carried out a joint intervention in July, SCMP Economy reported.
