Japan finance minister says undervalued yen is problematic

Satsuki Katayama said she will continue close communications with the US Treasury to support orderly forex markets, including around planned phone talks on Sept. 25.

Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said Tuesday that she believes an undervalued Japanese yen is generally problematic.

FXStreet reports Katayama also said she agreed with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to strengthen cooperation, when asked about phone talks scheduled for Sept. 25.

Katayama said Japan will continue close communications with the US Treasury and communicate closely with bond markets and market participants, while pursuing debt management policy.

She added that interest rates are determined by markets and that the yen’s value is broadly linked to Bank of Japan policy, the differential between Japanese and U.S. bond yields, and risk sentiment among traders.
