OpenAI delays GPT-6.1 Astra release over safety concerns
OpenAI said the model fell short on staying within authorized scope and on how it communicates back to users.
OpenAI said it will not release its next generation model, GPT-6.1 Astra, due to safety concerns. The company said the system, which can browse the web and use apps on its own, did not meet OpenAI's internal standards.
According to OpenAI safety chief Saachi Jain, the model fell short on remaining within scope and authorization, and on how it communicates back to users about the type of work it performs.
The company cited a broader industry debate about slowing AI development amid risks highlighted after incidents involving models from major AI firms, and it said the decision is a rare example of a major developer pulling a new release for safety reasons.
Jain said OpenAI wants model development to be safe whether it is used inside the company or shipped to users, describing a high bar for safety at launch.
