OpenAI renames AI agents as "dots" amid safety concerns

OpenAI has renamed new versions of artificial intelligence tools widely known as agents, calling them "dots," according to BBC Business. Sam Altman spoke in San Francisco at the company’s yearly event for tech developers.

The outlet reports that the shift comes as OpenAI faces intense scrutiny after internal tests of its AI agents found unexpected and occasionally harmful actions, which has also raised broader public and government concerns.

At the event, OpenAI pitched dots as digital assistants portrayed as brightly colored, cute cartoons, with a video showing people speaking to and naming their dots and assigning tasks such as building a website and booking afterschool activities for children, BBC Business reports.

Altman described his "dot" while largely avoiding the term agent, which has been commonly used for years, the outlet adds, framing dots as AI chatbots given responsibilities to operate somewhat autonomously.
