Kotak AMC MD Nilesh Shah warns against chasing “once in a lifetime” deals

Shah said missing an opportunity should not be treated as an irreversible loss, even as investors increasingly look to private markets.

Kotak Asset Management Company Managing Director Nilesh Shah urged investors to prioritize patience over urgency when considering private-market opportunities such as startups and emerging investment themes, speaking at Kotak Private’s Take and Counter Take (TACT).

In the discussion, Shah cautioned investors against letting fear of missing out drive decisions, arguing that investors should not assume every new deal is a one-time chance, especially when sell-side messaging frames opportunities as “once in a lifetime.”

Shah said people should not chase investments simply because they are promoted that way, and he added that missing one opportunity should not be treated as an irreversible loss.

He also tied the point to the growing interest in private-market deals and related activity, including IPOs, as the future of wealth creation shifts across public and private markets.
