Legacy mutual fund houses outperformed newer rivals in 4 of 6 categories

In the large- and mid-cap category, legacy AMCs averaged 3.2% returns from Sep 2025 to Sep 2026, versus 0.8% for AMCs launched in the past decade.

LiveMint Markets analysis of six mutual fund categories found that established asset management companies outperformed newer rivals in four of the six categories, citing their longer performance histories and steadier investor flows.

In the large- and mid-cap fund category, legacy AMCs posted an average return of 3.2% between September 2025 and September 2026, compared with 0.8% for fund houses launched over the past decade, based on data from Value Research.

The outlet said the performance gap was narrower in multi-asset allocation funds, as volatility tested results across categories.
