Brevan Howard Digital says managing crypto needs new operations
In a Hedgeweek survey, over half of hedge fund managers reported no current plans to allocate to digital assets, while 10% were exploring.
Brevan Howard Digital Chief Investment Officer Chris Rayner-Cook said that running digital asset strategies is not just a matter of using different trading instruments, because the operational work is shaped by continuous trading and fragmented market infrastructure, according to Hedgeweek.
In Hedgeweek’s “Getting Institutional: State of Digital Assets in Hedge Funds 2026” survey, more than half of managers said they have no current plans to allocate to digital assets, while 10% said they are exploring without committing capital yet.
The outlet also cited survey responses on why allocations have not moved forward, including reputational concerns cited by 8% of respondents and a lack of internal expertise cited by nobody, regardless of firm size or region.
Rayner-Cook said managers often frame digital assets as outside the mandate of their funds, with more than a third selecting that explanation and the share rising to more than half among respondents who provided a substantive reason.
