Ofcom investigates whether Meta’s Instagram Instants met UK safety checks
The probe centers on whether Meta performed required risk assessments before launching the Snapchat-style disappearing images feature, with potential penalties up to 10% of global revenue.
Ofcom has opened an investigation into whether Meta breached the UK’s Online Safety Act after launching Instagram Instants, a feature that lets users send images that disappear after viewing, the Guardian Business reports.
The watchdog said it is examining whether Meta carried out adequate risk assessments covering how the product could allow illegal content or be accessed by children, as social platforms are required to evaluate risks before making significant changes to service design or operation.
The Online Safety Act provides for enforcement actions that could range from a formal warning to a fine of up to 10% of global revenue, according to the report, citing Ofcom’s director of enforcement George Lusty.
