Network Rail power failure halts trains across north-west England
The outage, caused by a short power cut affecting Network Rail's Manchester operating centre, followed a summer of heatwave-related speed limits and additional rail incidents, including a derailment near Lewes.
A short power cut affecting Network Rail's operating centre in Manchester triggered a train halt across the north-west of England shortly before 14:00 on Wednesday 6 August, leaving passengers stranded on platforms for hours, according to BBC Business.
BBC Business reported that some travellers had to book hotels for the night after the outage.
The incident added to what the outlet described as a difficult summer for rail users, citing repeated heatwaves that required speed reductions to avoid track damage, along with delays and cancellations.
BBC Business also pointed to other disruptions, including a serious derailment near Lewes, East Sussex, and a smaller incident near Wickford in Essex, as Britain faces relatively high cancellation rates and steep fares.
