China plans 1,000-satellite network for Central Asia monitoring

The first five Tianwu Constellation satellites are expected to reach orbit by the end of 2026.

China plans to deploy a constellation of more than 1,000 remote-sensing satellites to observe Central Asia, according to China’s official news outlets Xinhua and The People’s Daily, outlining the Tianwu Constellation project.

The first batch of five satellites is expected to be launched into orbit by the end of 2026. The initiative is presented as a joint effort with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, with a stated goal of monitoring environmental developments and limiting damage from natural disasters and climate change.

The report notes that remote-sensing satellites can gather broad data for civil or military uses, and says the satellites will be operated by China with data processed in the PRC, leaving Central Asian states with limited access.

The story also links the effort to broader China-Central Asia technology engagement, including a strategic seminar in Kazakhstan led by 01.AI chief Kai-Fu Lee and attended by senior government officials, focused on AI model selection and implementation.
