Most homeowners view their homes as part of who they are
The Redfin-commissioned survey polled 4,000 U.S. residents, and renters were far less likely than homeowners to describe their home as anything more than a place to live.
Redfin reports that nearly three quarters of U.S. homeowners, 74%, would rather be at home than anywhere else, according to a Redfin-commissioned survey tied to National Homeownership Month in June. The survey results also found homeowners were about as likely to agree their home reflects who they are, at 74%, and that they feel a sense of belonging in their neighborhood, at 72%.
The poll, conducted by Ipsos, surveyed 4,000 U.S. residents, including 2,280 homeowners and 1,431 renters. Respondents answered a single question measuring how likely they were to agree or disagree with statements about how they relate to their current home and neighborhood.
Redfin Principal Economist Sheharyar Bokhari said the emotional benefits of homeownership are a major reason owning remains a cornerstone of the American Dream, characterizing a home as more than a place to store belongings or sleep. He added that while affordability is still a challenge, a buyers market is giving some house hunters more negotiating power.
Bokhari said buyers are increasingly able to secure concessions and include inspection contingencies, which can help them make more informed decisions before buying. The story does not quantify renter views beyond the homeowners comparisons included in the survey headline figures.
