Hong Kong to extend compensation coverage to injured gig delivery workers

Under the proposal, gig workers could receive sick leave pay, medical expenses, and compensation for permanent incapacity, with minimum death and incapacity amounts set at HK$514,510 and HK$584,220 respectively.

Hong Kong plans to extend job-related injury compensation to gig workers in food and goods delivery who work for digital platforms, according to a proposal prepared by the Labour and Welfare Bureau.

The coverage would apply when platform workers sustain injuries or die “as a result of an accident arising out of and in the course of performing platform work.” In injury cases, workers could be eligible for payment for sick leave, medical expenses, compensation for permanent incapacity, and costs for surgical appliances.

For fatal cases, compensation would cover funeral and medical attendance expenses, as well as compensation for death.

The paper to be tabled for discussion at next Friday’s Legislative Council manpower panel meeting says the minimum compensation under the existing Employees’ Compensation Ordinance would apply to platform workers, including HK$514,510 for death and HK$584,220 for permanent total incapacity, with a monthly earnings ceiling of HK$38,670.
