Super Typhoon Bavi grounds flights and knocks out power in Japan’s Okinawa
Japan Airlines cancelled more than 100 flights for Friday and Saturday, affecting nearly 20,000 passengers, while up to about 900 buildings in Okinawa were without power as the storm nears.
Super Typhoon Bavi is approaching Japan’s southwest and is expected to pass very close to the Sakishima Islands in Okinawa prefecture early Saturday morning, with authorities warning of violent winds, torrential rain, landslides and flooding, Reuters reports via SCMP Economy.
Maximum sustained winds were topping out at 162 km/h (100 mph), and residents on Ishigaki were taking precautions such as taping up windows and draping windproof nets across homes and shops.
Airlines grounded dozens of flights in the region, with Japan Airlines cancelling more than 100 flights for Friday and Saturday, affecting nearly 20,000 passengers, and All Nippon Airways cancelling more than 160 flights through Sunday, disrupting travel for roughly 20,000 people.
Reuters reports that nearly 900 buildings in Okinawa were without power as of Friday afternoon, while on Ishigaki some beaches, coastal parks and the local ferry terminal appeared closed.
