Typhoon Bavi weakens as Hong Kong expects extremely hot weekend

Hong Kong’s Observatory forecast maximum temperatures of 33 C on Friday and up to 35 C on Saturday, with showers possible from high heat as the typhoon heads toward China’s coast.

Hong Kong expects extremely hot weather over the weekend as Typhoon Bavi weakens and moves across seas east of Taiwan toward Guangdong, with unstable offshore conditions already disrupting some flights, according to SCMP Economy.

The Hong Kong Observatory said Bavi’s outer air stream would subside after it passes through the vicinity spanning northern Fujian and southern Zhejiang, leading to mainly fine but extremely hot conditions in Guangdong from Friday to Sunday.

It added that high temperatures may trigger showers, and that a fresh to strong southwest monsoon could make weekend conditions windier along the coast of Guangdong.

SCMP Economy reports the Observatory’s latest nine-day forecast calls for maximum temperatures of 33 C on Friday, rising to as high as 35 C on Saturday, and it said isolated showers are expected before next week becomes more unstable under a broad low-pressure trough. The National Meteorological Centre said Bavi has weakened to a severe typhoon, with winds at its center falling to 45 metres per second and expected landfall between Fuqing in Fujian and Wenling in Zhejiang.
