Woman accused of Las Vegas marriage scheme to plead guilty to two felonies

Authorities say the scheme involved more than US$100,000 in alleged false pretenses, with prosecutors saying a plea deal could support restitution for victims.

Jiaying Chen, 33, who authorities say married more than a dozen men in Las Vegas to fund gambling, has agreed to plead guilty to two felonies, according to SCMP Economy.

Chen waived her right to a preliminary hearing during an appearance before Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Rebecca Saxe, and her lawyer, Thomas Wells, said she plans to enter the pleas later this week.

The plea deal covers one count each of bigamy and obtaining money under false pretences more than US$100,000, Chief Deputy District Attorney Austin Beaumont said, adding it would allow restitution reports to be filed and potentially reimburse victims.

SCMP Economy reports Chen was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department in 2024 on multiple counts of bigamy and theft, after an arrest report said she submitted 14 marriage applications from March 2019 to May 2024 that led to seven marriage certificates, and that she posted bond and then disappeared.
