Chinese semiconductor scientist Wang Danhao’s ashes returned to China
His ashes were sent back nearly four months after Wang died by suicide after US law enforcement questioned him, a case that left his mother and fiancée severely distressed.
The ashes of Chinese semiconductor researcher Wang Danhao have been returned to his home in China nearly four months after he died by suicide following questioning by US law enforcement, according to SCMP Economy. The University of Michigan alumnus, 31, is now back with his mother, his only immediate family member, after the remains were returned through family arrangements described by a source familiar with the matter.
The report says Wang had planned to marry his fiancée this summer in China, and that both she and Wang’s mother experienced severe emotional distress after his death. A legal professional in Michigan who spoke on condition of anonymity described the case as sensitive.
Wang had secured a faculty position at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, his alma mater, and was preparing to complete his US research before flying back to China in May, the source said. Since 2022, Wang worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Zetian Mi’s lab at the University of Michigan, focusing on advanced semiconductor materials aimed at enabling more efficient electronics and next-generation light-based technologies.
His work was featured on the university’s website in 2024 and 2025, the report added. SCMP Economy wrote that colleagues remembered Wang as a gifted, hard-working researcher with a bright future.
