Sensex and Nifty 50 extend winning streak amid earnings optimism

The Sensex rose 0.21% to 78,094.64 and the Nifty 50 gained 0.27% to 24,383.60, while India’s rupee strengthened to 95.41 per dollar.

India’s benchmark stock indexes, the Sensex and the Nifty 50, both rose for a third straight session on 31 July, supported by better-than-expected Q1 earnings, according to LiveMint Markets.

The Sensex finished up 166 points, or 0.21%, at 78,094.64, while the Nifty 50 ended higher by 66 points, or 0.27%, at 24,383.60. Broader market indicators also improved, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 each rising 0.44%.

LiveMint Markets reported that overall market capitalization of BSE-listed firms increased to nearly ₹ 486 lakh crore from ₹ 483 lakh crore in the prior session, adding about ₹ 3 lakh crore in value in one day. The gains also follow more than 2% increases in July, though the Nifty remains down 7% year to date, and the Sensex is down over 8%.

Despite the positive close, momentum was tempered by US-Iran tensions, crude oil price volatility, and rising US yields. LiveMint Markets also noted that crude oil traded above $89 per barrel, and the Indian rupee rose 9 paise to 95.41 per dollar, its strongest weekly gain since March, as central bank intervention was reported to be ongoing.
