Google launches Nano Banana 2 Lite, cuts image cost and latency

Nano Banana 2 Lite generates 1K text-to-image outputs in about four seconds at roughly $0.034 per image, positioned below Nano Banana 2.

Google has launched Nano Banana 2 Lite, a new entry model in its image generation stack, designed to deliver faster and cheaper results than Nano Banana 2. According to Decrypt, the model uses gemini-3.1-flash-lite-image and produces text-to-image outputs in roughly four seconds.

Decrypt reports that Nano Banana 2 Lite costs about $0.034 per image at 1K resolution, which is roughly half the price of Nano Banana 2 at $0.067 per image at the same resolution. The outlet also notes the Lite model is about 2.7 times faster at comparable settings.

In head-to-head testing described by Decrypt, the Lite model matched or beat Nano Banana 2 on many fields, while the more expensive Nano Banana 2 may be preferable when fine details matter. Google frames Nano Banana 2 Lite as a direct replacement for the original Nano Banana model, gemini-2.5-flash-image.

Nano Banana 2 Lite is available via Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, and the Enterprise Agent Platform, and it is integrated into consumer products including Search, the Gemini app, NotebookLM, and Google Photos, Decrypt adds. The model also works alongside Gemini Omni Flash through the Interactions API, allowing users to stack up to three sequential edits in a single session.
