Ethereum Name Service proposes ENSv2 activation without forcing .eth migration

The Oct. 11 proposal would let domain holders keep current names indefinitely, but opting into a permanent migration would end the ability to manage original domain tokens on v1.

Ethereum Name Service has proposed activating ENSv2 without requiring existing .eth domain holders to migrate to the new system, according to CryptoSlate. The Oct. 11 proposal would allow users to keep their current names indefinitely as long as they continue renewing them, while still offering a permanent migration option for those seeking upgraded features.

CryptoSlate reports that once ENSv2 is activated, it would handle all new .eth registrations, replacing the existing registration infrastructure. The proposal would replace ENS's existing 2017 registry with a hierarchical structure where individual domains can maintain separate registries for their subdomains.

Holders who choose to migrate would permanently transfer management of their domains to the new system, with no mechanism to return their original tokens, CryptoSlate said. The plan would be subject to approval by the ENS decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), and an Oct. 12 governance bulletin listed the vote as pending, with no announced launch date yet.

CryptoSlate also noted that the upgrade is designed to give owners more flexibility in assigning permissions, including delegating responsibility for specific names or records while retaining broader control. The proposal remains awaiting ENS DAO approval.
