Hong Kong arrests 65 in crackdown on triad-linked gambling income
Police seized about HK$30,000 in betting proceeds and shut an illegal 279-square-metre petrol station, alongside raids on gambling and prostitution premises.
Hong Kong police say they have arrested 65 people, including 11 sex workers and 54 others tied to suspected illegal gambling, in a two-day joint crackdown with fire services and immigration authorities targeting alleged triad-linked income sources, according to SCMP Economy.
The force said officers raided five illegal gambling parlours and four premises involved in illegal prostitution. Police also shut down a 279-square-metre, illegal petrol station across the Tai Po and Sheung Shui districts, and issued summonses to three additional people for running an illegal petrol station.
Superintendent Lui Sze-ho said some suspects had triad backgrounds and used residential flats and tenement buildings as cover for illegal mahjong parlours. He added that some also leveraged the World Cup period to control illegal football betting activities.
Police reported they seized a large number of gambling tools, about HK$30,000 in betting proceeds, and more than 18,000 litres of illicit fuel during the operation.
