Avalanche strikes Broad Peak expedition in Pakistan, climbers unaccounted for
The Alpine Club of Pakistan said it is coordinating an immediate search and rescue operation with government officials and seeking helicopters, depending on weather and operational conditions.
An avalanche struck the Broad Peak expedition in northern Pakistan, leaving 10 international climbers missing and out of communication, the Alpine Club of Pakistan said, citing initial reports received late Thursday.
The club said the team was led by Nirmal Purja, and included five Nepalese climbers, Pakistani mountaineer Sohail Sakhi of Hunza, Omani climber Nathira, American climber Mallory Geis, a Chinese climber identified as Wang, and another foreign climber.
Alpine Club of Pakistan vice-president Karrar Haidri said the club’s president, Major General Irfan Arshad, and senior leaders were in contact with government officials to facilitate a rapid search-and-rescue response.
The club added that efforts were underway to mobilize helicopters and other rescue resources as quickly as possible, subject to weather and operational conditions.
