World Cup quarter-final set to boost UK hospitality sales by £500m

An estimate projects fans will drink 9.3 million pints and spend on takeaways and TVs during Saturday’s England versus Norway match.

England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway on Saturday is expected to deliver a major sales boost for UK businesses, with one estimate projecting about £500 million in incremental spending tied to watch parties and venue bookings.

The estimate points to heavy consumption and retail spend during the match, including fans drinking 9.3 million pints, ordering takeaways, and buying new televisions, as venues show the game to supporters.

Some of the biggest beneficiaries are ticketed watch party locations, many of which reportedly sold out within hours after England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the last 16 on Monday.

The tournament has already supported the hospitality sector, with UKHospitality reporting pub sales up 77% on matchdays versus a typical Tuesday, and the British Beer and Pubs Association expecting the sector to make £27.5 million from an additional 5.5 million pints on Saturday.
