Democratic pastors plan bids in US midterms to rein in Trump

The pastors say their focus includes legal abortion access and protections for LGBTQ rights as they run in November.

A group of white Democratic pastors is organizing bids for the US midterm election, framing their campaign message around the idea that Republicans have used Christianity for political gain while seeking to limit US President Donald Trump’s influence, according to an Agence France-Presse story carried by SCMP Economy.

One of the insurgents, Adam Hamilton, who leads a Methodist megachurch with 24,000 members in rural Kansas, said the Christians being heard in Washington do not reflect the Jesus described in the Gospels.

Hamilton, 62, is running for the US Senate as a Democrat and supports policies including legal access to abortion and protecting LGBTQ rights, while also backing themes such as financial responsibility and a strong military.

The pastors linked their push to their opposition to Trump’s policies they say target immigrants, using that frustration as a motivation for their Democratic runs in November.
