Israel sets Oct. 27 parliamentary election date for Netanyahu

The Knesset term ends July 17, and officials said there is no plan to shorten the legislature under a dissolution law.

Israel will hold national parliamentary elections on October 27, the Knesset said, citing the date as the last allowed under Israeli law. The vote is widely viewed as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership amid the Gaza war, according to SCMP Economy.

The parliament’s current term is scheduled to end on July 17, which would allow Netanyahu’s ruling coalition to complete a full four-year term for the first time in decades, the outlet reported. In a statement, the Knesset said it expects the next general election date to remain fixed and that there is no intention of shortening the legislature’s tenure.

The Knesset also said there is no need to enact a Knesset Dissolution Law in the usual sense. SCMP Economy added that Netanyahu’s government has been racing to pass a series of bills in recent days to strengthen the ruling alliance ahead of the election.

In recent remarks highlighted by SCMP Economy, Netanyahu said he intended to form a broad national government that is not defined as right-wing or left-wing and would not depend on Arab parties.
